About the Exhibition
The Korean Folk Art, Inc. presented its third annual group exhibition, Querencia | 퀘렌시아, at Gallery CHUN. Curated by Stephanie S. Lee, director of the Korean Folk Art, Inc. (KoreanFolkArt.org), the exhibition featured twelve artists who continue to reinterpret traditional Minhwa—Korean folk painting—through their own perspectives and emotions.
Minhwa, a form of Korean colored painting imbued with symbolic wishes for happiness, longevity, and prosperity, has long been both decorative and meaningful. The participating artists, who meet regularly to paint using traditional materials and techniques, share their finished works each year to promote the beauty and virtue of Korean folk art.
The exhibition’s title, Querencia, comes from a Spanish word meaning “a place of rest, refuge, or homecoming.” In bullfighting, querencia refers to the spot in the ring where the bull feels safe and gathers strength. Similarly, for the artists in this exhibition, the act of painting Minhwa serves as their querencia—a peaceful sanctuary from the demands of daily life, a place where they can slow down, focus inward, and recharge creatively.
Through this shared practice, the members find connection and renewal, translating their affection for Minhwa into works filled with both cultural heritage and personal reflection. The exhibition featured more than twenty pieces, including Pin Tree and Crane symbolizing longevity, Reeds and Geese representing peace in later life, Sea, Cranes & Peaches for long life, as well as Lotus Paintings, Flower-and-Bird Paintings, Chaekgado (Bookshelf Paintings), and Tiger-and-Magpie Paintings—each one offering a glimpse into the artists’ inner landscapes and aspirations.
