HWAJODO / 화조도 (Painting of Flowers and Birds)

by Stephanie Lee | | 0 Comments

A painting of flowers and birds.

Hwajodo folding screens usually portray pairs of birds, deer, rabbits, butterflies, or bees on each panel because pairings of animals symbolize a happy marriage.

Since the theme of a loving couple was believed to encourage fertility, the Hwajodo was in particular used as decorations in the bedrooms of newlyweds or for wedding ceremonies.
